Ok, so Brian O'Connor has let his mark get away and has run into hiding from the police, who are now chasing him with a string of charges (From aiding and abetting to infinite counts of dangerous driving). He travels from Los Angeles, across America to Miami, building up his cash and street racing form as he goes. This leads us into the fantastic opening sequence of the first race. Typical setting, fast import cars, hot chicks, big sound systems and enough money to burn a whole in Richard Bransons pocket floating around. O'Connor gets the call:
"You wanna race?"
"You know I need the money."
So it's settled. The silver and blue skyline squares up alongside an RX7, a Supra and an S2000, ready to run into one of the most exciting race sequences ever put down on film, ending with an enourmous bridge jump.
The film then escalates to O'Connor (Paul Walker) getting caught by the cops and being given a choice: Work for us and your record dissapears, don't work for us and you're going away for a long time. The story continues to unwind and ends up with O'Connor working
with an old friend, Roman Pearce (Tyrese), who has been given a similar ultimatum.
Initial tensions between the characters cool off and they set to their task undercover, working for millionaire drug baron, Carter Verone (Cole Hauser), and working alongside 'fellow cop', Monica Fuertes (Eva Mendes).
Tyrese and Walker have some brilliant comic moments on screen together and display such a fantastic chemistry that it's hard to believe that they haven't really just been best friends for years. Additional comic support is injected via the hispanic duo of Enrique and Roberto, the slightly simple henchmen of Verone.
Mendes offers a convincing role in many scenes, and portrays her fears genuinely when hiding from Verone. Another notable performance came from the second rapper in the cast: Ludacris. Although taking very much a back seat in the general plot, Tej's antics and interactions with the Girl-Racer Suki (Devon Aoki) strike a note that I'm sure rings true in the minds of many a man with fantasys of his fun-in-the-sun lifestyle.
Action scenes keep the audience on the edge of their seats throughout, with everything from a grizzly torture scene to 1.3 tonnes of Chevrolet Yenko Camaro Dukes-of-Hazzarding onto the back of a private yacht (although in the film, a replica, not a real Yenko, was used). Another interesting point to make is that the crashing half of the boat stunt was filmed all in one perfect take, just incase you were interested...
Anyway, before I spoil anymore of the plot, onto the DVD extras:
Inside 2Fast 2Furious - a look into how, when, where and why this movie was made.
Actors' Driving School - A very good mini-documentry on how the actors were trained up for all their car stunts.
Supercharged Stunts/Scenes - In depth behind the scenes looks at some of the most visually stunning parts of the film.
Making Music with Ludacris - A brief summary of Ludacris' music video used to promote the film.
Out-takes - Same as usual, a few funny bloopers.
Deleted Scenes - Some particularly good ones here, watch them to find out more.
Tricking Out a Hot Import Car - Hardly different (if at all) from the same film on the DVD of the 'The Fast and The Furious'. Interesting and packed with hot cars all the same.
Actor Spotlights - Brief interviews with the cast.
Car Spotlights - In depth explanations of the creation of and artistic influences behind the starring cars.
Feature Commentary - Simple commentry on the movie, if you like commentarys you'll like this.
Prelude to 2Fast 2Furious - A great mini-movie showing the transition from original to sequel in an innovative and interesting way.
DVD-Rom features - A few little extra pics and bits and pieces. Nothing spectacular.
Animated anecdotes - Entertaining and well made, does exactly what it says on the tin.
Subtitles are available in Engilsh SDH (Subtitling for Deaf and Heard of Hearing) for the main feature and all additional DVD bonus bits, except for the last three on my list.
Sound is provided once again in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround, and the DVD is rated as a 15 (Although the original feature on its own was only rated as a 12).
One particularly nice thing about the DVD interface is the option to set up the general theme to either Brian's, Roman's, or Suki's car. This really just changes the background and sound, plays a short video clip and allows access to the individual features for that car, but it's a nice touch, and makes navigating the different sections much less tedious than it could have been.
I believe it's appropriate to mention at the end of my review, the ending credits sequence, featuring computerised, artistic representations of each of the cars from the movie, racing across the screen in almost as exciting a manner as many of the main racing scenes from the rest of the film. I think this is a credit to the creator of the credits sequence, and actually compels the viewer to 'stay 'til the end'. All in a great film, and well transferred onto the DVD format.
