Having been away a little while, I was wondering what to begin my return with! Then my mind drifted back to last Friday evening when my son Alex and I spent 1 hour and 40 minutes glued to the big screen!
I had my doubts as to how good 2 Fast 2 Furious could be without Vin Diesel on board (Pause for a quick drool)! Could it match up to the original at all? The first film opened up a new world to us and has apparently increased the popularity of street racing in the US, which the police are not too happy about!
The film begins as they set up for a street race. The roads are blocked and the cars are all lined up. Unfortunately they are one car short, which is where Brian O'Conner (Paul Walker) comes in. After letting Dom (Vin Diesel) walk in the last film, he has been thrown out of the police force in disgrace and is making a living on the street racing circuit in Miami.
After the race is over, he gets caught by the police
and in exchange for clearing his rap sheet, he is to go undercover for the FBI. Carter Verone (Cole Hauser) is wanted by the FBI for money laundering and other unpleasant behaviour. O'Conner is to go for a job as a driver for Verone and find the evidence to convict him. He needs a partner for this, so goes back to his old neighbourhood and old buddy Roman Gibson (Tyrese).
The film follows the two racers as they get the job with Verone with the help of undercover cop Monica Fuentes (Eva Mendes). You follow them through races, chases and begin to see and understand the attraction of the street racing world.
Paul Walker (the Fast and the Furious, The Skulls) fits his character brilliantly. He has the surfer dude with a bit of an attitude look down to a T. He is the sort of guy our mothers always warn us about and we just want more of. A mixture of the adrenaline and masculinity, with the ability to be completely head over heels with one woman.
Tyrese is excellent! I loved his character! Such a lot of bad attitude! He manages to be cool, sexy and bad. You believe the change in him when he goes from blaming the world for all his problems to facing up to his own mistakes and he is so cheeky!
The guys will love Eva Mendes (Training Day). She is incredibly beautiful and sexy, and steals the show from all the other scantily clad women! You see how difficult and frightening being undercover can be, and the awful decisions you she has to make to break the case and protect her identity!
Cole Hauser (Pitch Black, Good Will Hunting) is very smart, handsome and frightening as Verone. He projects an incredible amount of evil and power, while being very charming. He is the sort of character you would never mess with!
Director John Singleton (Shaft, Boyz N the Hood) has done an incredible job with this film. He takes you from the frightening extremes of the underworld of crime to the excitement of the street racing circuit! You are really shown how it must feel to be in a street racing car at incredible speeds. My son and I were sat on the edge of our seats during every race and chase scene. It was incredible! I left the cinema on an adrenaline high myself, and I hadn't left my seat!
The soundtrack is full of loud, heavy beat tracks, which add to the sounds of the cars and increase the excitement!
This film builds on and improves the original. The first film introduced you to the street racing world, this film takes you further into it. You begin to understand the allure of such a hedonistic lifestyle. Fast cars, beautiful, scantily dressed women and all because you love cars and can drive.
The races are incredible too. Rather than the straight 1/4 mile that was shown in the first film, you are now racing around corners and over raised bridges. You really begin to see the skill needed by the drivers and how easy it would be to get killed!
The police have also improved their methods of catching the racers. New technology is shown in the film. The police have a new innovative way of stopping the cars in their tracks, without injuring anyone! You learn more every day!
My recommendation? If you love a good action movie, lots of high speed car chases and are a bit of an adrenaline junkie, go for it! You won't be disappointed! A great escapist movie!
