This film was never going to be about the story, and if anyone was intending to see it based on the plot then they would need their head examining. No, as many people have said beforehand the plot, which is there albeit on a very small scale is just an excuse for the cars and the effects. For those of you interested, it sees Brian O'Connor (Paul Walker) as a street racer in Miami having left the LAPD in the first film. Having made a deal with the force in Miami he has to go undercover with his childhood friend, Roman Pierce (Tyrese) to catch Carter Verone (Cole Hauser).
So, typical action movie fare then, but what about the performances. Well Walker seems to struggle a bit near the beginning of the film with some of his lines feeling forced, but as the film goes on he seems to get more and more into the role. Same goes for Tyrese. Eva Mendes as Monica Fuentes, another undercover cop, plays her role well, but my main applause goes to Chris Bridges, otherwise known as the rapper Ludacris. His acting, admittedly not in an oscar-worthy role was way above what I had expected from him, and made me wait for his appearances.
Then there's the cars, which are jaw-droppingly stunning. I don't know that much about cars, so I'm not going to give a list of those in the film as they mean little to me but they do look good, and when wrecked do induce a few cringeworthy moments. The special effects are good, especially in the street-racing scenes, and the end credits are worth watching as well.
So in all, it's not going to win any oscars, but it wasn't made for that. However for an hour and three-quarters it's worthy entertainment and I never felt like it dragged.
