Sadly the first point to note is that 28 Days Later, does not really continue on from the previous movie. Although our high speed zombie creations are back, created from an terrible accident; the cast and characters from the original instalment are all gone, worse still never once is there any mention of these characters, so it seems we'll never know their fate.
Anyone old enough to remember would most certainly have made comparisons between 28 Days Later and classic TV shows like Day Of The Triffids, The Survivors and more recently The Last Train. 28 Days Later mixed an apocalyptic nightmare with George Romero's Living Dead movies, with high speed zombies instead of slow walking ones. It was inevitable that after the success of 28 Days Later, the revitalisation it had on British cinema, and the "To be continued..." style ending that this movie franchise was not to be a one off. So several years on and the story continues 28 Weeks Later.
What 28 Days Later does do is introduce a new set of characters 28 weeks after the terrible incident turned our world upside down. But here what you see and expect is far from the reality, none of the new characters are safe from the falling of the preverbal axe, and horrifically 20 minutes from the beginning of the movie the lead cast member is pretty much removed from the movie, with the exception of the odd appearance. In 28 Days Later the story was told through the eyes of an adult, in 28 Weeks Later the story is told through those of a child, or children I guess.
So 28 weeks on London's Canary Wharf has become a sort of safe haven, those who have survived have made there way to the countries nerve centre, where they are quarantined and can once cleared begin to enjoy the assembly of a new life, that is of course until our two meddling brats Scarlet & Jacob put their rather smelly oar in the mix. It's with this two annoying offspring that my greatest criticism of the movie takes place, and that's because I could not warm to either character, I wanted a zombie to turn up and rip half their faces off leaving them to a bloody death. The boy in particular is really annoying, he reminds me of the annoying dubbed kid from Italian horror; whiney, moody, always running off, he is just so incredibly annoying.
My second big criticism of the movie is its musical score by John Murphy which I confess is pretty excellent, but do we really need to hear it every 12-15 minutes throughout the film. Not content with using this score to its fullest ability (the same track with no variations at all) Murphy then sidled off to Hollywood and sold the same score to the horrifically bad Bionic Woman series starring Eastenders actress Michelle Ryan, that atrocity is a different review altogether, but worth a mention as this score is going to be around for a long time to come.
What I will give in 28 Weeks Later's favour is that it's actually a more watchable movie than its predecessor. The reason for this is simply that its more action packed, the scale of the action has been bought up three or four levels, and where as 28 Days Later would enjoy a few viewings you'd probably have forgotten all about it 10 years down the road; 28 Weeks Later is designed for a larger more global audience. You could argue that it has too much American influence in particular in pointing out that the Americans have come over to save us from ourselves, the military featured are all American. One scene also has heavy influences on Romero's Dawn Of The Dead, as massive amount of zombies break through the cordon of safety that surrounded Canary Wharf.
I'm a little concerned that the movie makes the great British people seem a little lame and inferior, cowardice seems to be an issue that raises its head a number of times during the movie, particularly in reference to Robert Carlyle the apparent lead actor.
Lovers of gore will not be upset by this movie, the special effects are terrific; I guess the influence of the Spanish filmmaking and funding help to illustrate this area. In the 70's Spanish and Italian horror lead the way across the world, and on this effort both countries were joined like brothers. Italian horror then forged its way into American horror particularly in Romero's Living Dead series. These special effects featured in 28 Weeks Later are not your usual British fare, and at times they might seem a little two realistic. One scene in a decontamination area is almost too graphic to watch.
The movie is pretty harrowing at times, especially when cast members you grow to like are thrown aside so annoying little turds can survive. There is some fairly sensitive subject matter that is admirably dealt with, and this could easily have border lined into the area of becoming racist if not dealt with by expert hands.
28 Weeks Later, I suspect is going to be a second instalment story of a trilogy or a quadrilogy if you like, there are certainly indications at the end that its far from being the end, and we may well see more European influences in a third instalment as story certainly hints at going in that direction.
28 Weeks Later is available from 10th September priced around £12.99 with the following special features:-
Audio commentary by director/co-writer Juan Carlos Fresnadillo and producer/co-writer Enrique Lopez Lavigne Deleted scenes with optional audio commentary 'Code Red: The Making Of 28 Weeks Later' featurette 'The Infected' featurette 'Getting Into The Action' featurette 'Development' featurette 'Decimation' featurette Theatrical trailer Teaser trailer
My preview disc however featured none of these so I cannot comment on them.
Advantages: Brilliant special effects, nail-biting action and jumpy bits! Disadvantages: The characters of the children are a little dull...
...and it happened to have 28 days in it.
I absolutely loved it straight away, which i wasn't expecting as i'd always avoided films that had zombie's in as i automatically classed them as "rubbish"..... which, looking back, seems rather strange as i'd NEVER actually sat and watched one!! Lol! But i was literally captivated by 28 days later. The eerie sight of London completely empty grabbed me straight away, and the action really started quickly and ... ...I couldn't wait to see 28 weeks later when i heard about it, especially to find out what had happened to London and the rest of the country.
And it is this fact that makes me a little ashamed to admit that it was actually only yesterday that i went out and rented it!!! *lowers head*
Now, i've had a brief glance at a few other of the reviews, and they don't seem to be really enthusiastic about this follow up to 28 days later, but i absolutely loved ...

...Over the course of 28 weeks, Britain is declared relatively safe again and an American-led NATO force begins repopulating the country, amongst them being Doyle, a wisecracking sniper; Flynn, a helicopter pilot and family man; and Scarlett, an army medical officer who is wary of two children, Tammy and her younger brother, Andy, who have just arrived by plane with other British expatriates. Now another 28 days after the outbreak in 28 Weeks Later, the remains of the helicopter are seen, while someone is calling for help in French-accented English over the helicopter's radio. ...I was raging!
Now 28 Days Later was full of atmosphere, tension and Britishness...28 Weeks Later is full of gung-ho Americans and nothing else. How on Earth this passes as a sequel is beyond me.
The storyline is one of the ever conquering Americans coming to save little old Britain again. I am not being political here, but its obviously a Hollywood remake. In its defence however, the hero does, for a change, die and he is an American soldier, pretty ... ...myself to enduire anymore of this torture. That and the fact that I hired it and its gone back dont help!
The ending leaves it wide open for a 28 Years Later I guess, but based on this one, I wont be rushing out to hire out. ...

◘► Released in 2007 under the Science Fiction/Horror Genre. 28WeeksLater is a higher budget, post apocalyptic sequel to the International film success of 28 Days Later which was released in 2002. 28WeeksLater picks up where the last story left off. Though not a direct sequel, 28Weeks features a different set of people, in similar circumstance. Director Danny Boyle was unable to direct 28Weeks, due to other work commitments, but became Executive Producer on this film, and he hired Juan Carlos Fresnadillo as Director, after seeing his work on the 2001 film 'Intacto'. This would be Juan's first time directing an English language film. Boyle did keep in touch though by becoming 2nd unit Director. There is also an entirely new cast on 28WeeksLater, and plans have been made to create a third chapter, and make this film ...

This thrilling action horror is the film of its year, and I think one of the best films I have ever scene. From the diverse story line to the special effects and actors it is an all rounder for the horror lover who doesn't want something too intense. The hopeful beginnings give way to a masterful ending which holds apocalyptic visions for the future. As a battle between zombie kind and the American forces breaks out in the familiar setting of our most familiar city (London), a tale of panic, hope and violence comes to our screens. Available now on DVD in virtually every modern outlet the film is well worth the money. I don't want to give anything away, but trust me this is something that should not be missed! ...
Advantages: You get to see more gore and blood and zombies walking around. Disadvantages: You can just about predict what will happen next.
million at the box office, the DVD release for "28WeeksLater" is a bare-bones affair. Along with two deleted scenes and a director's commentary, there are three featurettes about the making of the movie, the infected and the action sequences. (One very surprising tidbit revealed here is that Danny Boyle worked as the second unit director.) The most interesting bonus feature is "28 Days Later: The Aftermath," two animated versions of the graphic novel that explain the origin of the rage virus. Still, there's nothing here that makes this DVD a buy instead of a rent. ...
