I loved this film, its tells a story of modern day apocalyptic survival rather than blow a budget on a gore-fest and base a story around mass blood. Imagine you wake up from a coma spanning 4 weeks to find you've been locked in a hospital room, with a key by the door. As you open the door, instead of finding doctors, nurses, patients rushing around the corridors you see noone. Nothing. You hear no sounds whatsoever. Then you leave the hospital to find the streets of London deserted and a mess. Posters of missing people litter the walls and notice boards while the papers mention of a viral outbreak and rioting everywhere across the UK. Imagine a group of crazed people then chasing after you, who do not talk, or negotiate, only charge at you - do you run? hide? try to find a cure? This is the dilemma for Jim - a bicycle courier who was knocked down and awakes to find that life as he knew it is no more. While running from his first confrontation with the infected, he runs into a few others who are trying to survive the aftermath as well. However as one of them is believed to be infected after another battle, they find a father and daughter in a tower block taking shelter. The father believes he heard a call on the radio for survivors to come to Manchester where the army have a secure blockade and from there they make the long journey for protection whilest not knowing if the army group had survived, or if the world outside the UK is safe and well from the virus as well. The movie has a few known actors in it - all British as its set and produced entirely in the UK. Cillian Murphy plays the lead role Jim while Naomie Harris plays one of the first survivors he meets - Selena. Brendan Gleeson makes an appearance as the father Frank while a young Megan Burns plays Hannah, his daughter. Also we meet Christopher Ecclestone in a pre-Doctor Who role as Major Henry West, acting head of the small army brigade in Manchester.
The film is most remembered for its iconic images of places like London and the M1 motorway completely void of vehicles and people, by closing off these areas for minutes at a time in the early hours of daylight to minimise distruption to the streets etc. It also has brilliant special effects including explosions and raging fires for example Manchester has shown in the distance to be burning down as "there were no firemen to put the fire out".

So when Jim(Murphy) Awakes from a coma to find a desolate London he wonders around looking for people picking up the endless amount of money and canned soft drinks that aligned the streets, until ... ...with the infected which results in Jim cracking a priest around the head with a bagful of canned drinks,
From there he is saved by 2 saviours who then proceed to take Jim to look for his dead parents with disastrous effects.

Will They find salvation?
Who will they meet?
And will they be nice? My opinion –

Advantages: Danny Boyle - fantastic Mancunian director Disadvantages: Don't expect a zombie movie... they run!
...made a better film than 28 Days Later...
This film was released here on November 1 2002, a day too late for my liking... 29 days after my birthday :-P
Defining the movie into one specific genre is difficult, is it a horror? Well humans killing humans, so not really... more a thriller I'd say, although where IMDB get "Sci-Fi" from I have no idea!
We basically have a film about a group of civilians brought together through fear more than anything ... ..."Infected", along the way there'll be a few deaths in their midst - but who will survive? A father and his daughter called Frank and Hannah are discovered in a tower block and invited along as they make their way to a now destroyed (not that you can really notice) Manchester to find an army outpost for protection... this may be the worst decision of their lives, to travel all that way on the basis of a recording on the radio... I wouldn't, would ...

DVD Description
TRAINSPOTTING director Danny Boyle returns to edgy form and reinvents the science-fiction/horror genre with this apocalyptic tale of viral infection and Darwinian survival. A fatal virus is unleashed on the British public following the liberation of infected chimps from a research laboratory by animal rights activists. The virus can be transmitted in one drop of blood and manifests itself within seconds, infecting its victims with a zombie-like state of murderous rage. Within 28 days the country's population is devastated, and the streets of London and Manchester are apocalyptically deserted save for a handful of healthy survivors who attempt to salvage what is left of civilization. Led by a bike messenger called Jim (Cillian Murphy), the survivors must contend with not only the hordes of plague-carrying zombies, but also with each other, as they manouevre toward a supposedly better future. Shooting on digital video and making excellent use of the bleak English landscapes, Boyle crafts a tale of societal and spiritual devastation reminiscent of horror classics like NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD and SHIVERS.
