28 DAYS LATER is a sci-fi horror movie directed by Danny Boyle (who interestingly directed a couple of episodes of TV's INSPECTOR MORSE early in his career!). The story follows Jim who, waking up from a coma, finds that a virus has turned the population of the UK into psychopaths - they come across very much like zombies and remind me of those in George A. Romero's zombie "…Of The Dead" series.
The story is very derivative, not just of zombie movies, but also of classic science fiction, such as John Wyndham's DAY OF THE TRIFFIDS. However this is a version updated for the 21st century (the film was originally released in 2002). The storylines is gripping, and if you can cope with some horror, scares, and some gore, then this is definitely a film worth seeking out.
In fact, the storyline is so gripping, that I completely forgot that I was watching Cillian Murphy playing the lead in this film. I realize that a lot of people rate him as a good actor, but his odd looks usually disturb me and stop me from enjoying the film that I am watching in a way which I don't feel I would get if I was watching a more, shall we say, photogenic actor. However, this is my problem, not his, nor the film's, and as I say, the storyline is so gripping as to take my mind off of that.
So there we go - definitely worth a watch. The cheapest I have found this DVD is at the online store Choices DVD, which has it for only £4.49, with free postage and packing. The sequel to this film was recently released in cinemas, called 28 WEEKS LATER.
Advantages: blood and gore , action, violence Disadvantages: complicated plot near the end

Advantages: Good story, great action scenes Disadvantages: Ropey script, average acting
at the end that made me laugh even if the finale was a tad tame. 28DaysLater is definitely recommended for horror fans. For anybody else then the first Harry Potter film is doing the rounds on cable right now.

Advantages: A brilliant blend of science fiction and horror Disadvantages: slightly incredulous story line at times
I'm not usually a great fan of horror. I suppose I also feel a bit of an interloper because I don't actually own the DVD of 28dayslater ( at least not yet ). I do however intend to scour e-bay for it in the next few days. But having just seen this film on film 4 last night, I was staggered at how good it was.
The basic plot is not hugely original. Nasty virus sweeping the country has been attempted a number of times before. In fact I vaguely remember a bit of a series on the BBC that had 1 or 2 survivors driving around the UK trying to avoid a massive epidemic. But 28dayslater whilst not being amazingly original in the basic concept, manages to execute it in a way that I think borders on the brilliant.
The plot is simple. Anti-vivisectionists release monkeys from a testing centre. The scene is made all the more vivid because one ...

Advantages: great british film Disadvantages: low budget
After seeing the trailer for 28DaysLater, I was keen to see it when it was brought home on DVD for general consumption. It was more the idea of the film that caught my interest, rather than the horror side of it; which as it turns out was just as well.
After a fairly low-budget style opening sequence in a research laboratory, where monkey infected with the 'rage' virus is released and the virus spread begins, the film cuts to 28dayslater, where a young lad wakes up to a deserted hospital room, in a deserted hospital, in a deserted London. And the adventure begins. The shots of the lead character Jim making his way through the deserted London streets have a wonderful barren quality, coupled with a foreboding silence only broken by Jim's shouts. As the story pans out, the audience is introduced to the other main characters ...
TRAINSPOTTING director Danny Boyle returns to edgy form and reinvents the science-fiction/horror genre with this apocalyptic tale of viral infection and Darwinian survival. A fatal virus is unleashed on the British public following the liberation of infected chimps from a research laboratory by animal rights activists. The virus can be transmitted in one drop of blood and manifests itself within seconds, infecting its victims with a zombie-like state of murderous rage. Within 28 days the country's population is devastated, and the streets of London and Manchester are apocalyptically deserted save for a handful of healthy survivors who attempt to salvage what is left of civilisation. Led by a bike messenger called Jim (Cillian Murphy), the survivors must contend with not only the hordes of plague-carrying zombies, but also with each other, as they manouevre toward a supposedly better future. Shooting on digital video and making excellent use of the bleak English landscapes, Boyle crafts a tale of societal and spiritual devastation reminiscent of horror classics like NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD and SHIVERS.
