27 dresses is about a woman called Jane who loves weddings and helping organise them but she is always a bridesmaid but never the bride. The name of the film comes from the fact that she has 27 bridesmaid dresses squeezed into her wardrobe each one a reminder of the times she has been bridesmaid for a friend. The film opens with Jane (played by Katherine Heigl) rushing between two weddings both of which she has agreed to be a bridesmaid for but which are on the same day on either side of town. We watch as she rushes between the two changing in the back of the taxi and enjoying the fun at both.
27 dresses is a romantic comedy. There are really good characters in this film and its not just a romantic comedy about weddings it is also about the relationships and the personalities of the characters involved.
Jane is a lovely character she is friendly and a real people person, you can tell this by the fact that 27 women have asked
her to be their bridesmaid (is this a little far fetched I wonder?). Jane is obsessed with weddings she loves them yet she has never had one of her own. She has fallen for her boss George for whom she has worked for 5 years but has never told him how she feels. Then along comes her sister Tess whose presence is immediately noticed by George and the two begin a relationship.
Tess and Jane could not be more dissimilar, Jane has looked after Tess after her mother died, Jane is the one that fixes everything where as Tess is very spoilt, selfish, thoughtless and has never had anyone tell her no. When Tess plans to get married she becomes “Bridezilla” and everything has to be about her and she doesn’t care who gets hurt. Jane is faced with having to be bridesmaid to her little sister and the man she loves.
However whilst all this is going on Jane meets Kevin a man who seems very cynical about weddings and is amused at Jane’s wedding obsession. Jane does not like Kevin at all, he brings out the bad in her the only person who seems able to do this and we see a different more sarcastic side of her when she is with him. However appearances can be deceiving and what Jane does not know is that Kevin is actually a wedding reporter and it is the columns that he writes about engagements and weddings that she cuts out to keep in her book. Kevin decides to write a piece about Jane in the hope that it will get him promotion out of the wedding column but as he gets to know Jane his feeling towards her grow and he is left with a difficult choice. What happens well you will have to watch the film to find out.
I really enjoyed this film. It’s a really girly film with romance, comedy, weddings and dresses, what more do you need? There are some really funny moments and there are also some sadder moments. I liked the characters in the film they are engaging, you can really feel for Jane as she tries to please everyone but also feel her pain as her sister plans her wedding using some of the things that Jane wanted at her wedding.
If you have ever been a bridesmaid and had to wear a dress you didn’t like then will be able to relate to this film especially to the comment from each bride saying “And the best thing is, you can shorten it and wear it again!” To which Jane always the polite bridesmaid simply replies “So true!” and then stuffs it into her bulging wardrobe!
If you want a nice romantic comedy to curl up on the sofa to watch then I would recommend this one to you.
Special Features
There are two features which are well worth a watch if you have enjoyed the film. The first is “The Wedding Party” here they talk to the actors, director, scriptwriter and we get a look behind the scenes of the film. It also gives more insight into the film and the characters. The second special feature is “You’ll never wear that again” and this is a feature on the dresses, how the chose them, the different colours, here the costume designers really had a ball choosing the dresses and basically the bigger, uglier, louder and shinier the dress the better. Then they also looked at the various theme weddings which Jane was bridesmaid at the Goth wedding and the Gone with the Wind wedding and the dresses that were involved there.
