So it was coming up to the time of the month where it was my turn to host this months girly night in. Doritos were bought, wine was stocked up and then last but not least, the entertainment for the evening was needed. I was browsing round the DVD/CD department in my local Asda when this DVD's cover caught my eye. It really did screamed total chick flick to be fair but none the less it seemed like something myself and the girls would like.
One car journey and £12.99 later I was back home setting up the munchies for the evening, putting white wine in the fridge and getting ready for the rest of the girls to come round. They arrived and so the evening started. Wine flowed, Doritos munched and DVD was played. We laughed, gasped, cried, and almost died of embarrassment for Katherine Heigl's character, Jane Nichols.
This film I think is almost every single woman's worst fear...always being invited to the wedding as a bridesmaid but never being the bride. This story of a young single woman living in New York, who has attended more than her fair share of weddings, and pretty much organised all of them as well, was written by the fabulous Aline Brosh McKenna (Devil Wears Prada - screenplay).
The introduction to Jane starts with her attending two of her closest friends weddings on the same night. You're taken through this journey following Jane and her seemingly hectic life of constantly being a bridesmaid and planning one of her many friends' weddings. A series of events leads Jane to be introduced to a rather cheeky and yet devastatingly handsome Kevin Doyle (James Marsden).
After a bump to the head was received in consequence to almost every woman in the room piling on top of her to grab he bouquet, Kevin is the first person she sees peering into her eyes. Helping her into a taxi and taking her home Jane bids him fair well and carries on with her usual routine of putting another bridesmaid dress into the closet (that never closes) and picking up her favourite section of the news paper, the Commitments page. Unbeknowst to Jane she has dropped her diary in the back of the cap she was sharing with Kevin and so the story starts.
We see Jane's heart crippled as her little sister comes home and hooks up with her boss, whom she just happens to be in love with, and so in her down and deppressed mood she calls Kevin.
Jane's relationship with Kevin is almost one of pure and utter annoyance from her part. He annoys her, they bicker constantly and yet this seems to capture a brilliant onscreen chemistry. Heigl and Marsden seemed to click and in consequence their performances in the film did not seem strained or fake. They jest and laugh together and in turn start to fall in love with each other, unbeknownst to Jane how she really is feeling.
I would definitely say this is a film for the girls. I did make my boyfriend watch it with me and he fell asleep half way through, evidently not his cup of tea. The story line was entertaining and the performances we were given were excellent. I would say that if you aren't into the romantic comedy sort of category this may not be for you, but if you want something light, entertaining and absolutely hilarious this is the film for you.

Great review of the film itself, although I see you've posted this as a DVD review, but you've not mentioned the DVD features. Are there any extras? If so, what are they and are they any good? If you add to this, or if you change it to be posted as a "Film Only" review, which can be done by accessing "edit review" above the review and changing the drop down menu under the "Which format are you reviewing?" question at the bottom, please let me know and I'll re-rate.
