I've been wanting to see 27 Dresses for quite a long time, but have felt a bit put off by the mixed reviews I have read and heard about it. But I do love the romantic movie genre so I was quite sure I would actually like this film, so last night I persuaded my fiance to sit down and watch it with me. He wasn't overly keen on seeing it but I think we're both glad that we gave it a go!
27 Dresses tells the story of Jane Nichols, the woman who seems always to be the bridesmaid and never the bride. Jane has been a bridesmaid for 27 of her friends, wearing some truly awful dresses, and works hard for her boss George at a magazine. Jane's sister Tess reappears wite news of her own, causing Jane to re-evaluate her love life with a little help from newspaper columnist Kevin...
I thought this movie was going to be incredibly soppy and sentimental but I was actually pleasantly surprised by the way the film went. Katherine Heigl seems to be taking Hollywood by storm at the moment, starring in Grey's Anatomy and quite
a few blockbusters too which I've enjoyed so I hoped I would like her in this one too. She plays the sweet, pleasing Jane nicely, with the right amount of sweetness and cham without being too sickly sweet. I enjoy watching Heigl on-screen as she can be funny, sweet, sad or anything the film throws at her.
Heigl was joined on-screen by James Marsden (X-Men, Hairspray) who plays writer Kevin Doyle. Marsden was instantly likeable as the funny, goofy guy through the film even though I guessed immediately how his character would feature in the movie. He had a good chemistry with Heigl, playing his feisty funny character well against the sweetness of Jane. Malin Akerman took on the role of Tess, Jane's spoilt brat of a sister, and does a good comedic role although I did want to strangle her at points. And finally I also enjoyed the performance of Judy Greer, Jane's best friend Casey who had some great one-liners and added some comedy relief into the movie. Ed Burns played Jane's boss and Tess's boyfriend George, in a bit of a dopey role, but he was still good to watch.
To be honest, this film was pretty formulaic of the romantic comedy genre, with a somewhat predictable ending, via a nice little story throughout. The main storyline really focussed on Tess and Jane as sisters and their relationship with a more minor storyline of Jane and Kevin developing. I actually sometimes hated the story of Tess and Jane because I couldn't really understand how Jane could be that much of a walkover and put up with her sister and this did annoy me somewhat. But the acting between Heigl and Akerman was very good and the two made a good believable relationship.
The soundtrack was quite good throughout the film, and had a good number of both up-tempo numbers and slower more thoughtful songs. Stand out songs for me had to be Michael Jackson's 'Don't Stop Til You Get Enough' which was wonderfully used during the opening scenes of the film, 'Be Here Now' by Ray Lamontagne, 'Who Knows' by Britain's own Natasha Bedingfield and 'Bennie and the Jets' by Elton John, probably one of the funniest scenes in the film centred around this song (which I'd never heard of until this movie!)
The film was actually a lovely watch overall, especially for the romantics in us. Although it ended up exactly how I thought it would, I still enjoyed the lovely storyline and the wedding-themed bits throughout the film, and found myself getting a little teared-up at parts! Heigl did a really good job with the lead role in the film, she had a good on-screen chemistry with her co-stars, and she was just good to watch. It's a sweet romantic film, which my fiance and I very much enjoyed, and which I'd recommend to anyone who loves a soppy film every now and then!
The film was written by Aline Brosh McKenna and directed by Anne Fletcher. It was released into UK cinemas in March 2008 and has a certificate of 12. Running time is 111 minutes / 1 hour 51 minutes. The DVD is available on Amazon for £11.98.
