Wahey, I finally found a product I didn't like - only 1 star from me and even that was too much!
~~~ Synopsis ~~~
The basic plotline centres around Jane, a PA to her sisters fiancée and the guy she is secretly in love with. Having been a Bridesmaid or Maid of Honour 27 times Jane throws herself into organising her sister's wedding and meets a wedding journalist along the way who is astounded by the way Jane reacts to her friends weddings.
After sabotaging her sister's wedding in a fit of jealousy, will Jane's 28th wedding dress be the one she gets married in?
Don't worry, I am not about to give the ending away. It will be for you to watch and decide!
~~~ Cast ~~~
Everyone knows Katherine Heigl from either Grey's Anatomy or Knocked Up. In Knocked Up, her first lead in a movie she excelled as she got pregnant after a one night stand. In this movie she seems to play the same character as in Grey's. I think Katherine plays Jane in this movie in exactly the same way as she portrays ditsy Izzie, which is why it will seem familiar, the only difference being Jane has brown hair as opposed to Izzie's blonde hair. Unfortunately
Katherine does not bring much else to the role.
Malin Akerman, who plays Tess has previously appeared in The Heartbreak Kid with Ben stiller. This is not a challenging role for Tess and requires little versatility. Tess is the spoilt little girl who gets everything and Malin is very suitable for the role with her big eyes and curly hair, she is depicted as the epitome of sugar and sweetness. I hate to admit it but I think these girls are both in it for the eye-candy.
Ed Burns plays George, Tess's fiancée in what is a somewhat removed film from him, so I am surprised to see him in a chick flick. I wonder what persuaded him to take on a mainstream movie. Ed does not exude any charisma in this role and is a world away from the humorous or gritty roles he does take on like Saving Private Ryan or The Brothers McMullen.
James Marsden (Enchanted) plays the Wedding journalist. The role is essentially one of Jane's conscience. He says things that Jane would not necessarily admit to herself. James plays the role but as with the other cast it does not set the screen alight. Me thinks it is female eye-candy, though I would have preferred Rob Lowe!
~~~ DVD Features ~~~
The DVD comes with the following features of which only the deleted scenes are worth checking out, so don't think you have missed out. I don't see any point in including anything else. I can only think it is for the die-hards of this movie.
[1] The Wedding Party - a short documentary about the making of movie [2] You'll Never Wear That Again - another documentary about the 27 bridesmaid dresses and how they came about [3] Jane's World - another documentary, unnecessary in my opinion. [4] The Running of the Brides - there is a theme here, another useless documentary on actual brides hunting down their dresses - why? Remember Monica from Friends looking for her dress for her wedding to Chandler? Watch that, it was more interesting and funnier [5] Deleted Scenes
~~ Conclusion ~~~
Anyone who has seen 'My Best Friend's Wedding' will find this tale familiar and you could be forgiven for thinking it is similar as it lacks any originality in the tale or the characters. The primary part of the movie centres around Jane begrudgingly undertaking all the activities in planning the wedding and becoming the put upon sister against the younger more glamorous sister but it doesn't draw any interest.
The movie itself was a bit bland and for me it didn't engage me and make me feel like I needed to see it through to the end. Equally the chemistry between all the actors in the movie was flat and there was no depth to any of the characters. In fact no character development. I've tried to find something that I actually enjoyed in the movie and the best part is the intro to the movie where Jane is attending two weddings simultaneously and they are dancing to 'Don't Stop Til You Get Enough' by Michael Jackson. I like that song!
All in all, I am very disappointed by this movie. The trailers and reviews all make it out to be a funny lighthearted upbeat movie. Given that it is directed by a female director it seems to be aimed at those that are over sentimental when it comes to weddings. It is lighthearted but pretty one-dimensional. Personally I would advise you not to waste your time or money.
