With having so much work and being so busy lately I feel like I have had no time whatsoever to just sit down relax and watch a film and it is something I really like to do. It is getting to that sort of time of the year now when we are all in anticipation of the summer blockbusters which are about to come out. However, not always is it the summer films that are the best of the year, sometimes it can be those out at the start that are the best and go along unmissed. One film which was just recently out is the film '27 Dresses'. I had read about it in magazines and saw posters everywhere and thought it looked good so went to see it.
The film begins with us finding out the Jane Nichols (Katherine Heigl) has been a bridesmaid at twenty seven weddings. What we first see is Jane changing outfits and rushing between two weddings that she has agreed to be bridesmaid at. It seems a bit ridiculous but in the middle of her attending two weddings she gets knocked out after trying to catch the bouquet and a man who introduces himself
as Kevin Doyle (James Marsden), helps her but notices as he helps her to her taxi that she has forgotten her diary. Kevin is a journalist and writes the Commitments pages on the New York Times, who on the paper is known as Malcolm Doyle who is Jane's favourite writer.
Jane has always liked her boss George (Edward Burns), and hopes that one day something will happen with him as she continues to do everything for him being his personal assistant. Flowers arrive at the office for Jane but she has no idea who they are from and hopes they are from George. Soon, Jane's sister Tess (Malin Akerman) comes to visit and they are quite opposites Jane is more serious, a bit frumpier and Tess is adventurous and a bit more careless.
This film is one with quite a basic plot but a lot cannot be revealed or the main plot is given away and from this point on the plot really develops. I didn't think it was a very complicated film but what it was, was a fun chick flick which was easy to watch and was a feel good film. I like films like this I would probably categorize it under the title of romantic comedy as this is what it is really.
The acting in this film I suppose is good enough for the film type it is. Nothing too challenging but I still found the cast likeable. Katherine Heigl was good in this part as I'd seen her in the film Knocked Up and have to say she was disappointing in that film. In this she was a normal woman who just wanted to be happy and was living a day to day life but nothing ever changed. I think she was good in the part as she is able to do comedy and emotional parts which is challenging and she proved to be believable at both also.
James Marsden was again one of the other film leads and I haven't seen him in anything in a while. I used to like him but didn't like his role in the X-Men films so was happy to see him again in this as a good looking, likeable love interest. He fitted this well and seemed to have a good onscreen chemistry with Heigl. He was right for the part and should do more films like this as it suits him well and his charm comes across onscreen also.
Malin Akerman is the role of Tess the sister, she is different in this compared to her role in 'The Heartbreak Kid' which was very different. She is more of a pretty girl rather than dumb in this part and I couldn't believe it was the same actress, it isn't a role which requires a lot of talent but there are some emotional scenes with her sister which are quite touching.
I think this is a good film for a girl's night in or just to watch on a day you are feeling down, it doesn't really require a lot of concentration and has a few laughs as well as serious parts in it too. There is a plot and it does all match up well and the characters are all likeable and relatable in different ways. This is one of the best chick flicks I have seen in a while and I would definitely recommend it. It is still showing in some cinemas if you are lucky enough to catch it.
This film is 107 minutes long and is a UK: 12A certificate. The official website is http://www.27dresses.co.uk where you can get more film information.
