Ok....so for a long time i've been planning to write reviews on the previous seasons of 24. Since i'm totally addicted to the series, i thought i would review them all! Mmmmm well that was a while ago now, and i still havn't got round to it!! So i thought i'd review the most recent series, seeing as i watched it non stop last weekend, in prepartation for season 6 hitting sky this month. Need to be up to date! Yes last weekend consisted of marathon viewing, eating crap, drinking crap, and stopping ony to insert the next dvd, get some more crap, or to take a loo break! Yes you could either call it dedicated, or just a waste of time, but seeing as this is 24.......
It seems you either love and know 24 of by heart, or you've never even heard of it! 24 is the ground breaking series, featuring CTU (Counter terriost unit) agent Jack Bauer, following him in the many bad days he seems to have. Each series is set in "real time" , therefore there are 24 hours over 24 episodes inb each. Previous seasons have seen Jack (played by the totally fantastic, and totally believable Kiether Sutherland) save America/presidents from terrorists, loose loved ones, be betrayed and just everything in between. Lets just say, each new day (or season) Jack fights the evil form of terrorism from many different groups. No season begins or ends well for Jack it seems, and this one is no different.
***SUMMARY OF SEASON 5***
Season 5 begins at 6am, with Jack playing "dead". Only 4 people know that he is alive, as during the end of season 4, Jack had to be dead in order to stay Alive. So we see Jack, or Frank leading his other life, not as a CTU agent, but as your average guy for a change. As per usual with 24 it's not long before things start taking a fast pace, action filled, twist and turn at every moment, style. Within the first hour the audience is introduced back to the Counter Terriost Unit ( Where most of the 24 series are set within), and also introduced to those familiar faces we love. So the scene is soon set, the threat on this "day" being from a russian terrorist group. I'm finding this very hard to write......there are so many twists and turns it's hard not giving away the plot! So i'll just plod on trying to summarise! The plots this time involve the assination of a lead character (Or maybe even a few more!!!), the whitehouse and the new president are featured heavily, and of course the terrorists, who always seem to have a back up plan! There is a lot of betrayal, from a lot of different people/places.....it seems you can trust no body in LA!!! With Jack being "set up" for a lot of bad things from a lot of powerful people, whilst continuing to try and save LA.....well it really is a bad day!
***THE MAIN CHARACTERS***
- Jack Bauer - the main man himself! As mentioned above, played by Kiether Sutherland.
- Chloe O Brian - Jacks friend and fellow CTU agent. Chloe is the "hard faced" but nice agent who continues to stand by Jack come what may. Played by Mary Lynn Rajskub.
- Bill Buchanan - The head of CTU. I love Bill. He's a kind and fair man, who doesn't get treated with a lot of respect in this season. Again, he turns against CTU in his efforts to help Jack capture the terrorists. Played by James Morrison.
- President Charles Logan - Mmmm, well you need to watch for yourself to make your mind up about him, but all is not what it seems with the current president. Fantastically played, none the less by Gregory Itzen.
- Martha Logan - The first lady, who basically has a rough ride of it this season, with her husband, the president, constantly trying to get her confined for being mad. As it turns out shes one of the sanist of them all! Played by Jean Smart.
- Audrey Raines - Jacks love interest, who believed he was dead. Audrey works inside of CTU, again helping Jack. Audrey herself is subject to a very bad day!!! Played by Kim Raver.
- Kim Bauer - Jacks long suffering daughter only makes a brief appearance in this season. Played by Elisha Cuthbert. Something nice to look at, according to t'other half!!!
- Agent Curtis Manning - Again a CTU agent, based in "the field" a really loveable character, trustworthy and dependable. Played by Roger R Cross.
- Directed by - There are many different directors and writers for each different episodes. Not just directed by the one!! The main ones being Tim Iacofano, and Brad Turner.
There are many other cracking characters in this series, and for me to write about them all, would be a review of it's own. I have introduced you to the "main" ones at least. One thing i will say is that the level of talent with the actors/actresses within 24 is magnificent! Not a bad apple in there! All give 101% to their performances, and it shows that alot of research and time has been used to create these oh so believable characters
***THE BOX SET***
Within the box set ther are 7 DVDs, the first 6 DVDs containing 4 episodes each of 24, with the 7th being the special features. There is also an episode guide included, giving a brief summary of each hour....a bit pointless if you ask me, when your watching it anyway!! I bought season 5 for £35.99 from woolies. Well worth the price. You can pick season 5 up for £32 mark from places such as Amazon.
***SPECIAL FEATURES***
DVD 7 includes - 4 featuretts, including a look into the cast members, a look into the camera work behind 24, and a little bit about the music for 24. Worth a look, but only if you are a really diehard 24 fab - Extended and deleted scenes, with optional commentry. To be fair you can see why these were not included!
***WOULD I RECOMMEND***
TOO RIGHT I WOULD!! If you've yet to see 24, you've missed out. A fantastic hard hitting series, extremely believable, in the sense that nothing is "oh yeah, like he could do that" and it's not one of those series, where the goody is always good, and always prevents anything bad happening. Something bad does tend to happen, and not all battles are won. I would go as far as to say that it's fairly realistic (Ok so one bloke wouldn't have that many bad days!). Blokes will love it simply becauseof the action, the fast pace and just the general blokiness of it (running around shooting guns, chasings baddies etc), not to forget the superb special effects!Gals will also love it, if not for the same reason as the blokes, but also because Jack Buarer is mighty fine and full of manliness, and because despite being action packed, there are many fab, touching storylines in between. The characters are all extremely believable, and watching it, you really begin to feel as if you know them! (YES i do know it's not real!) Definately worth a watch.....once again, thanks for reading guys and gals xXx
Advantages: One of the best seasons of the series. be prepared to be shocked Disadvantages: Other priorities in life with become secondary while watching
...not anything to do with 24 don' worry, therefore i had seen nearly half of the series and then had to wait for the dvd release to continue watching. Only once have i done this, never again. Wait for the dvd, its worth it. Anyway, this season is one of my favourites as it doesnt hold back on the storylines and shock factor plus provides probably the best ending so far in the 24 series.
MAIN PLOT - Feel free to read the plot here but as with my previous ... ...and every one of the 24 seasons.
Both Gregory Itzin and Jean Smart were nominated for an emmy for outstanding supporting actor and actress and had regularly played alongside each other in various stage performances.
24 LAYOUT - A lot of the filming of this season is between CTU and Logans presidential retreat, built especially for the character. The split screen is still very much in force which is good to see. As with the other seasons, the episodes ...

Advantages: Compelling, thrilling, great cast, great acting, good storyline Disadvantages: Ridiculously addictive - i'm not joking i've stayed up all hours watching.
...it's that familiar ring tone. 24 is back with CTU and it's all familiar line up of heroes and villains, computer nerds and field squads, technogiggery and more technogiggery...oh...and Jack Bauer. Naturally, America is at risk once again from the evil (inevitably foreign - and even more inevitably Russian) terrorists. I'll do my best to portray the plot without including too many spoilers, but as you will know having watched 24 (curse those of you ... ...cast and their acting ability, 24 has never suffered. Indeed, it is the brilliance of the line up that manages to pull off the impossibilities of the plot convincingly and enjoyably. Whilst Jack plays his usual role of the American die-hard patriot and field agent mastermind, entering into the fray as usual guns blazing in all the right places, perhaps some of the most commendable acting takes place within the confines of CTU: of course i refer to ...

...door and close the curtains!
24 can only be watched in one sitting, to split it up would only keep me anxious inbetween!
For those of you who haven't heard of Jack Bauer... my only question is where have you been? Welcome back and let me give you a quick insight as to what has gone before...
The idea is simple, 24 hours in 24 episodes
Day 1
This was the first time that the viewing public was introduced to the Los Angeles CTU (Counter Terrorist ... ...David Palmer in the next 24 hours! So set's the scene, and over the next 24 episodes the twists pile up, which include Jacks family being kidnapped by the people involved, so that Jack will be the trigger man! Which of course doesn't happen.
And at the end of the day a Mole in CTU is discovered, and what they do to escape capture is devastating to Jack!
Day 2
Another day begins at CTU and Jack is in the centre of the day's events yet again. Terrorists ...

Advantages: Gets you hooked from the outset Disadvantages: NONE
...prepared to suspend disbelief, then 24 is unlikely to disappoint you. And Series 5 is no exception. Jack Bauer has to return to CTU 18 months after having faked his own death, to get to the bottom of a major conspiracy and help those he loves. This series starts off with a BANG! I definitely did not expect the first episode to start off with such a cliffhanger and unexpected event. Sorry I can't be more specific, but I don't want to spoil the storyline ... ...gets you hooked instantly.
It is definitely a series that shows you the more emotional side to Jack Bauer, and once again Chloe is a formidable character with her balance of outright rudeness and formidable loyalty to Jack Bauer. I'd say that the twists and turns in this series are better than ever, and the new president is definitely a great addition to the plot.
With a mixture of old and new characters, this series entertwines the old and new ...

Advantages: Jack Bauer is back from the dead!! Disadvantages: Onec you've watched it you can't erase the memories and go back!
24 always works me up into a real lather and you will usually find me on the edge of the sofa on occasion shouting at the screen in excitement. I'm making myself seem a little crazy of course but trust me I don't make a habit of this!
This series had the most exciting first 10 minutes of television ever and for ardent 24 fans you will be shocked and astounded at what takes place. I watched this at least 2 years after it first came out and feel lucky ... ...waiting for!
I know I'm not alone in declaring Jack Bauer as my ideal man and of course we weren't doubting it would happen, but he is indeed back from the dead! Yes he's a ruthless killer when needs be but only for the good of those he loves and the good ole US of A. President Logan is unbelieavably pathetic though - is that what Bush is like but dafter? ...

Advantages: Exciting, gripping, unconventional Disadvantages: Can get a little samey sometimes, Kim Bauer is very annoying!
24 is a series which takes place over 24 hours and each episode covers one hour. There have been five seasons to date and it has been a very successful show both in America and worldwide.
Jack Bauer is a federal agent who works for the Counter Terrorist Unit (CTU). He is willing to do whatever it takes to get the job done. Each series of 24 covers a different threat faced by the USA. Jack Bauer and his Counter Terrorist Unit are asked to help handle the situation.
Perhaps 24's greatest strength apart from Jack Bauer is its supporting cast. The CTU staff all have their own individual characters and quirks and the President of the USA is a very powerful and charasmatic figure. The villains are well drawn in shades of grey and are never charactures. It is a drama that takes itself seriously and doesn't dumb down to its audience. ...
24 assumes its familiar format of real-time action, unfolding over the course of a 24-hour period. This season, Jack Bauer has gone underground, working on an oil rig near L.A. under an assumed name, But a series of murders targeting the few people who know Jack is still alive brings Jack back to town, just as the president is preparing to sign an arms treaty in L.A. Suddenly, Jack finds himself the prime suspect in his confidantes' murders.
