Midnight. The day of the California Presidential primary. Federal Agent Jack Bauer is called away from his wife Teri (Leslie Hope) and his daughter Kimberley (Elisha Cuthbert) and into his place of work, Los Angeles Counter Terrorist Unit (CTU). Here, Jack is told that there will be an assassination attempt on Presidential Candidate, Senator David Palmer (Dennis Haysbert), sometime in the next 24 hours. His assignment is to protect Palmer, stop the shooter, and flush out a mole inside the agency. Meanwhile, Teri sets off in search of Kim (who has snuck out of the house), whos night of partying has suddenly turned into a struggle for her very survival. Even now, after 6 seasons, 24 is still the best thing around. It is a nerve racking, nail biting, teeth grinding, edge of your seat roller-coaster. With the entire 24 episode season covering a single day (each episode is an hour of the same day), and every episode ending on a cliff hanger, 24 is a non-stop ride.
There is a distinct lack of special features though. The only 2 of any note are, an alternate ending, which I will not reveal as it will spoil the ENTIRE season!!! And a "season 2 preview", which is basically just a trailer made up of clips from season 1! So there is nothing on offer here. But when a programme is this good, who cares about special features. This is the show that relaunched the career of Kiefer Sutherland. And he is truly wonderful as Bauer, evoking pain, emotion, but also, a much darker side. He thoroughly deserved his Golden Globe Award (Best Actor in a Drama series) and is the lynchpin of the whole show. However, there are also fantastic supporting turns from Dennis Haysbert, Carlos Bernard, Sarah Clarke, and a special guest appearance from Dennis Hopper. There are also more twists and turns than a snake pit, and the finale will blow your mind! TV drama, simply, does not get better than this.
