1971 DVD

...I saw this movie because it won the 1971 Academy Award for Best Picture. While I don't rate it too highly, in the scheme of things it is a great 70's film about the hard times of New York Cops as they battle against drugs. The French Connection details international heroin smuggling into New York City via the "French Connection" and the attempts of a different kind of detective who wished to stop it. This and Bullit are both widely known for an exciting car chase (what about the film "The Chase"). Good acting, writing, and location filming made this one of the big hits of 1971. A sequel follows. As time passes, the story is still good, but modern technology would up-date this drama. Of course a battle against drugs is a win-lose situation. ("The French Connection" is a winner, but the battle still rages on)... Read review

Advantages: Eeire atmospher, original idea
Disadvantages: A bit dated.

...Although this film is a touch dated - it was made in 1971 - it still has the power to make you uneasy if not scared witless. The story revolves around a scientists (Robert Stephens) trying to unravel a strange phenomena that appears around recently deceased people called the Asphyx and his attempt at harnessing it's energy for the purposes of immortality. Needless to say it all goes awry. A pretty good horror movie if a little dated but you can imagine with a good director - say Ridley Scott - nowadays it could be very scary indeed. ...East is East is a hilarious film set in 1971 in Salford and based around a pakistani chip shop owner called George Khan who is trying to raise his 7 children to be traditional respectable pakistani's but doesn't have much luck. The characters are true individuals and will bring both tears of laughter and sadness to your eyes as the story unfolds. 2 familiar characters in the film are the actors who play Vik and Dev in Coronation street.
