This is an imaginative production on the traditional Jack and the Beanstalk story. While it was made for young kids, the story maintains adequate complexity to keep adults interested. But it really is something worth watching - it sure does have an unusual ending.
Starring Richard Attenborough, Matthew Modine, Vanessa Redgrave, Mia Sara, Daryl Hannah and many more - together they have certainly produced a fantastic film for us to watch. Although these actors aren't famous as say- people like Jennifer Aniston, Cameron Diaz or Brad Pitt or anyone like that, it sure is a great film. This astounding movie is directed by Brian Henson who funnily enough directed a lot of the "Muppets" movies: Muppets...

Advantages: A story worth telling... Disadvantages: ...but a story badly told

Probably the only character we really get close to is Ira Hayes (played by Adam Beach who gives the only memorable performance in the film). Hayes is an indigenous native American and a reluctant flag raising hero who struggles to come to terms with the propaganda role he is forced into. Advantages: The DVD looks and sounds terrific...every element falls into place beautifully... Disadvantages: those who hate Romeo & Juliet probably wont bother to give it a chance...

The two actors that I thought really stole the film however were Rita Morena (as Barnardo's girlfriend Anita) and Chakiris, who both won Oscars; let me put it this way, Chakiris alone is to dancing, what Muhammed Ali is to boxing. Robbins is the real master behind WEST SIDE STORY however, and he deservedly got two Oscars...one special one for his choreography and one for co-directing with Wise. An impressive achievement.... considerering also that he was fired halfway during production.
Of course, the DVD looks great while making the film, which was released back in 1961, seem like it was made yesterday. The DVD includes a second disk with an hour long documentary "Memories of West Side Story," which featured...
