THIRTEEN CONVERSATIONS ABOUT ONE THING tells the interconnected stories of several New Yorkers who are searching for meaning in their lives. Troy (Matthew McConaughy), a promising...
more...attorney, puts his seemingly bright future at risk when he drives away from an accident. He injures Beatrice (Clea DuVall), a young cleaning woman, and her recovery from the accident severely tests her natural optimism and affects her friend Dorrie (Tia Texada). Tiring of the predictable routine of his life, university teacher Walter (John Turturro) buys Troy's car and starts a relationship with another teacher, Helen (Barbara Sukowa). Walter's wife, Patricia (Amy Irving), is left to deal with his infidelity, but she finds a rare moment of solace on the subway when a stranger waves at her. The stranger, Gene (Alan Arkin), a claims adjuster weighed down by his responsibilities, resents the incurable optimism of his co-worker Wade (William Wise). The connections between these people are sometimes small and trivial, and other times momentous. But they are woven together with great skill by the film's scriptwriters, sisters Jill and Karen Sprecher. Jill Sprecher also directed the large cast, amongst whom the standouts are Amy Irving and Alan Arkin. Arkin in particular, with his beautifully modulated performance, essentially provides the spine of the movie.

This is a movie that will certainly get your mind racing about everyday life. It is a story that questions luck, well being and happiness against the fortunes of fate.

Plot Outline******

The story tells us of the lives of a lawyer, an actuary, a housecleaner, a professor, and the people around them intersect as they ponder order and happiness in the face of life's cold unpredictability. How happiness can be struck down as fast as what life brings you, and about the signs in life that might not be what you think it should mean.

A one minded and confident young attorney questions his own acts when he faces a dilemma if his own. A middle aged man decides to change his life. A woman who is now trying to come to terms with her husbands other love life. An envious businessman seeks revenge on a cheerful co-worker. And an optimistic young cleaning woman awaits a miracle. All these normal everyday people don't know each other but find themselves asking the same fundamental question - What is happiness, or is everything just fate? As they struggle to find their own happiness. Their lives become intervened with one another, will they find the answer there?

My Views********

This was a very well written story with some quite shocking moments and some unbelievable twists. It is a very clever plot, which can loose you at times. But the characters are very normal to every day life with some brilliant acting portrayed.

I really like how their lives at times intervened with one another, which I thought was quite clever and at times, very unpredictable.

The movie is set up like a lot of short stories, not necessarily in chronological order, which can get you confused from time to time, but all makes sense towards the end. ( The Movie 'Love Actually' is set up a lot like this one')

The cast was exceptional. Especially my favourite, Matthew McConaughey, who played the young attorney.
He played such a good believable role, in which I wern't sure whether I thought he got what he deserved, or I actually felt sorry for him. However all characters played rather compelling roles which will question your own thoughts on different matters. And may also change your opinion on certain things.
What may seem as though the characters are getting the worse end of a stick, sometimes their the ones that are better off.

Overall I would recommend this to anyone who wants to watch a decent, well written story that you have to think about. It captures your imagination, and rings true to every day life situations. I was extremely impressed with this one.

DVD EXTRAS - Audio commentary

There is not much in the way of DVD extras from the one I viewed, but it was one of them movies that didn't need any due to it's high story profile. All the answers were in the story. But the audio commentary will help for those who may have got lost within the plot.
