...This film is number 1in my favorite top 10 of war films. The fact that it shows what prisoners of war went through to escape from POW camps in Germany and even better is that its a true story.
With such a star studded cast and fantastic personal performances from Steve McQueen, Charles Bronson, Richard Attinborough and many, many more great actors of the silver screen both British and American.
Its a must buy for anybody and where as Saving Private Ryan was about just a squad of men this film tells the story of over a hundred men and their endevour to escape back to allied lines and to fight again against the Nazi Regime.
The DVD gives hours of entertainment with extras such as personal interviews with some of the cast.
Based on a true story, The Great Escape is epic entertainment that entertains, captivates, thrills and stirs....

I have not read the book, so I cannot comment as to whether it has stayed true to the story. There are DVD extras, but I have not watched any of them yet. These include 3 deleted scenes, a mini-documentary titled 'The Possibility...

...treat the German defenders is underastandable, when they are flame-throwed there are cries of "let them burn".
Tom hank’s performs fantastically as the captain in charge of a company of American infantrymen, his heroic attempt at playing the vengeful, uncaring officer deserves credit. After completing the beachhead hanks has to lead his men to the rescue to one Private Francis Ryan from Ohio who has had his three brothers killed in action. Through trial and error hanks get his men through to face a massive onslaught by The German Werchment to capture a vital bridge which leads to the death of all but one of his company....
