Having not seen the film version of 101 Dalmations and only hazily remembering the cartoon, I really wasn't sure about watching this. Disney sequels aren't exactly known for their high quality… but since we had bought this DVD cheap somewhere, I thought I might as well watch it. In many ways I was pleasantly surprised by 102 Dalmations, however.
The plot starts with eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeevil Cruella De Vil (Glen Close) having been "cured" of her fur addiction - in fact, she has become a bit of a dog lover! The new technique for mind readjustment that was used on her isn't exactly perfect though, so will Old Cruella come back? This is certainly the viewpoint of Parole Officer Chloe Simon (Alice Evans), who mirrors the rather interesting moral of the film, that people don't deserve a second chance because they don't change. (Oh well at least it's different!!) Add in a deranged Furrier (Gerard Depardieu), De Vil's loyal (who knows why?) Butler, Alonzo (Tim McInnerny), and a couple of ragamuffins with criminal records who run an abandoned dog shelter, and of course lots of dogs, and you have the whole set. The crux of the storyline is Cruella's personality change and how it affects those around here. There are typical Disney gags and a typical Disney romance thrown into the bargain. It's actually plotted quite well though and things go merrily on their way with one or two little surprises which stop the overall predictability from ruining the film. It's aimed fair and square at children, which is fair enough, but as light entertainment it's fluffy and has a few moments of absurd humour that will make most adults smile - especially adults happily living their second childhood. There are a number of amusing set pieces, most notably the finale where Cruella is turned into something quite extraordinary!
Glen Close as Cruella (or just "Ella", as she prefers to be called while in nice mode) is superb. She revels in the role with the extremely exaggerated gestures and affected speech. She is ably supported by Alice Evans and Ioan Gruffudd as the main straight (as in non-comical) roles, while poor old Tim McInnerny gets pushed from pillar to post as her Butler. Somewhat surprisingly I didn't feel that Depardieu really suited his character, but even so he wasn't exactly bad. Ian Richardson is scandalously underused in a small role as de Vil's solicitor. The animals of course do very well, and the CGI is implemented very well indeed. The music score is fun and fits the mood of the film very well. Don't expect a masterpiece and you could well be pleasantly surprised by the film itself.
DVD Extras
There are a number of extras on this DVD 0 Disney have gone for the "small but many" approach. Some of them are merely montages of clips from the film, as in "Puppy Overload". There is one deleted scene featuring Cruella De Vil's release from prison, which was quite fun. Other features include how the special effects were created (interesting stuff - they couldn't find a non-spotty dalmation so the spots on Oddball were digitally removed frame by frame!), how Cruella De Vil was created for the film (and how she compares to the animated version), and w the animal "acting" was achieved. Some good stuff along with some pretty mediocre - much like the film itself really.
Final Verdict
If you have kids this will be a good purchase. Otherwise, unless you are a particular fan of dogs or Disney, this is probably one of those "okay to watch once or twice a decade" films. Better than I was expecting. (My wife, who's seen the first film, says it's not as good as 101 Dalmations but that's hardly surprising. Even so this is nowhere near as bad as Disney sequels usually are!)
Availability
Amazon have it new for £6.97, we got ours quite a while ago from MVC for £5.99. Amazon's Marketplace have it from £4.30, but with the postage cost you're probably better off getting it new anyway, especially if you get it with a couple of other films and get free postage (over £15 gets you free P&P).

...curious placing here on Ciao, 102 Dalmatians is actually the live action sequel to the live action version of Disney's classic animation and not an animaton itself...erm if that made sense. It is also one of those movies which really had no place being made other than to line the pockets of Disney who having turned over $130 million in box office sales alone in their previous outing were obviously falling over themselves to make another similar killing ... ...too far.
You see, 102 Dalmatians isn't only a cynical attempt to weedle a few more pennies out of parent's pockets because Disney knows that all it need do is put cute puppies on screen and advertise and they'll pack a cinema, but its also an incredibly unfunny movie to boot. The best kids films works on two levels - they are funny for kids and they are funny for adults, which is why movies like Shrek are hugely successful and something like The ...

~ ~ I took my nine-year-old daughter and her little friend to see this latest kiddies’ film from Disney over the Christmas holidays.
To be honest, I was quite looking forward to it myself, as I had taken them to see “101 Dalmations” the previous year, and enjoyed the movie immensely, almost in spite of myself.

So browsing through a DVD site, I spied a copy of the film on DVD, it was region one – but having what I thought to be a multi region player, I ordered it! Basically, Cruella De Vil is released from prison. And she is a reformed character, no more does she want Fur coats, no more is she hunting puppies for their fur! Oh no Cruella (played again excellently by Glen Close) is totally reformed, totally changed! Instead of wanting to kill and wear the puppies, she now wants to help them. Luckily for her (and her millions of pounds), an animal shelter is about to be closed down for none payment ...

...unpredictable stuff, ain't it?)
102 Dalmatians has nothing going for it - even Close is found wanting here - there's a naff story line about a dog charity which de Vil takes over, setting up its owner to take the rap, naff acting, naff obligatory light relief in the form of a "WITTY" parrot who is convinced he is a dog, and some naff romatic interest. The parrot joke may appeal to the sub five year olds, but for anyone who's passed their 11 plus ... ...me there could be no greater insult. It was certainly insulting to the intelligence to have to sit through this entire pile of doggy doos.
Come on, forget it, WHO ARE YOU TRYING TO KID? One remake was bad enough, this is pushing things much too far. What, I ask you, exactly is the point of churning out dross like this unless it is merely to swell the bank accounts of the people responsible. ...

DVD Description
Glenn Close returns as the malicious fur-collecting fashion plate Cruella De Vil in Disney's 102 DALMATIANS, the highly anticipated sequel to the 1996 live-action blockbuster. Pursuading the authorities that she has been successfully rehabilitated, De Vil is released from prison, seemingly transformed into a law-abiding animal lover, securely under the influence of Dr. Pavlov's psychotherapy. Under the watchful eye of her skeptical probation officer, Chloe Simon (Alice Evans), De Vil comes to the aid of a failing dog shelter run by Kevin Shepherd (Ioan Gruffudd). But when Shepherd is promptly arrested for the theft of dalmatians and Chloe loses her own dalmatian pups, including the spotless Oddball, De Vil comes under suspicion once again. Her new alliance with a French fashion designer, Jean Pierre Le Pelt (Gerard Depardieu), known for his unusual flare for animal fur, doesn't help her case. Set in Paris, 102 DALMATIANS is a lighthearted and humorous tale of animal rights and identity conflict that climaxes in a riotous frenzy of hilarious slapstick comedy and heartwarming fantasy.
