DVD Description
A stunning examination of the plight of five young Red Army recruits as they are subjected to both grisly violence and humiliating conditions, 100 DAYS BEFORE THE COMMAND is a visually stunning film that was initially banned in its native Russia. The controversy surrounding the film comes from the homoerotic imagery that permeates the film underscoring the intense bond between the young men and contrasting the violence they encounter. An excellent film from the post-cold war former Soviet Union, 100 DAYS is both powerful and uncompromising.
Advantages: Tries to stick to the facts. Realism throughout. Shows both sides of the battle. Good cast, music, effects and is truthful. Disadvantages: Could have told the whole story included in the book.
...‘We were soldiers once’ is based on the book ‘We were soldiers once….and young’, which tells the true story of the 1st large scale engagement between American forces (1st Battalion 7th Cavalry) commanded by Lt. Colonel Harold (Hal) G. Moore and the battle hardened forces of The Peoples’ Army Republic of Vietnam, commanded by Lt. Colonel Nguyen Huu An in the Ia Drang Valley in November 1965. The story is mainly told by Hal Moore (retired as a Lt. General) and Joe Galloway (UPI reporter at the time of the battle) and what an incredible story it is too! In no way, does this film try to glamourise war at any time, rather it just tries to tell the true story. The story is filled with bravery on all sides, the NVA, the US Forces & those left behind at home.
I have to admit that I read the book well before buying the DVD on the day of its...

Advantages: A good depiction of this period of history Disadvantages: A little dated by today's standards
...Directed by Sergei Bondarchuk, Waterloo depicts Napoleon Bonaparte's brief 100day campaign, as the former Emperor returns from his exile on the island of Elba in a last attempt to spearhead a military campaign to maintain power. His plans will bring him into conflict with the Duke of Wellington and commanding their respective armies they will clash in one of the great battles in history.
Theis film is notable for it's lavish and immense battle scenes and is all the more impressive considering it was filmed during the 1970s when CGI was unheard of and all filming had to done in the traditional way. Bondarchuk's depiction of the battle was made possible by hiring thousands of off duty Russian soldiers as extras to portray men on both sides of the conflict. However the film would not be much without the resence of good actors and small...

Advantages: Enjoyable action, good cast, some amusing lines. Disadvantages: Never really surprises, some poor sets and effects.
...Commander James Ferraday (Rock Hudson, PILLOW TALK, TOBRUK) of the US nuclear submarine Tigerfish is ordered to take his boat to the North Pole to mount a rescue of the scientist of Ice Station Zebra.
The rescue mission is, however, merely an excuse to go as Ferraday and his crew are joined by the mysterious David Jones (Patrick McGoohan, SILVER STREAK, SCANNERS), Russian Borris Vaslov (Ernest Borgnine, THE BLACK HOLE, GATTACA) and Captain Leslie Anders (Jim Brown, THE DIRTY DOZEN, 100 RIFLES) with his team of marines.
It soon becomes apparent that the real reason to get to the Pole is to recover film of defence information vital to both the Russians and Americans from a crashed satellite. The race is on to get there before the Russians but a saboteur is determined to stop them.
Directed by John Sturges (THE GREAT ESCAPE...
